Peter Ridd: The idea coral reefs are close to extinction is ‘completely ridiculous’

Former JCU Marine Physicist Professor Peter Ridd says the idea that coral reefs around the world are close to extinction is “completely ridiculous”.

It comes after the university’s Centre of Excellence for Coral Reefs published a paper in relation to coral reefs and global warming.

According to Professor Ridd, the researchers looked at the number of corals around the world and there is “just staggering amounts” of it around the world.

“Even if you do lose a little bit of it from global warming, which I don’t think you will actually … the idea that the coral reefs are close to extinction is just completely ridiculous,” he told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
